WCCJA Award 2 – Leiulf Clausen

I just came from meeting with my editor, Kyle Yasumiishi, and he grinned and presented me with this award from the Washington Community College Journalism Association (WCCJA).

Leonardo Manco was born on December 16th, 1971, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he resides.
He started his career in the world of comics in 1989, working for Argentinean publishers, and some of his works where also published in Italy.

In 1991, he leaps forward and starts working for Marvel Comics, for which he made several books, such as Hellstorm( Prince of Lies), Druid, Captain America, Wolverine, werewolf by night, among others. In 2001 he was assigned a single issue of Batman( Gotham Knights) making his first contribution for DC Comics. 2002 saw him illustrating HorrorTalk.
In 2003 he was able get the DC Comics Hellraiser series, which he is still working on along with other current DC Comics projects.

Imagine that! The “current” whiz kid I admired is actually a veteran practitioner, with many years of style development behind him. I love his stuff (depending on who’s inking it)…what do you think?

Chris Miller, Creator/Executive Producer of “Warlock’s Magic – The Series” loved the renderings I did for “The Guardian of Rygos”, but admitted it was not exactly as he had imagined the creature. After carefully listening to his thoughts on the matter, I went back to the drawing board and submitted this revised concept.

“Looking Good” was his much welcome response. Hope you like it too.

This month mark’s the one year anniversary of All About Lemon’s Music Passion. I am honored to be chosen to select the Music Passion Theme for the month of April, 2013. I would like to ask everyone to present your favorite tune with the word “Day”, either in the title or lyric.

My entry is an inspiring promotion for BBC radio / television containing a vast array of talents from all walks of the musical spectrum, performing a rousing rendition of Lou reed’s “Perfect Day”.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and I look forward to listening to all of your perfect entries. Happy April everyone!

This special recording was made for the BBC Children In Need Charity.
The accompanying video was shown regularly on BBC1 and BBC2 during the last quarter of 1997.
For Christmas 1997, the summer garden seen in the video was replaced by a snow-covered garden.
When the video was shown on the VH1 channel, captions identified each performer.

“Lives in water…….has the front like a sperm whale with a Norwhale horn…………instead of a tail, it has Octopus tentacles……….has Crab legs along its body so it can leave the water and walk on land………….if you can do a 3d illustration, that would work….if not, just 2 turnaround shots like I did for the other character.”

(after all it’s only fair, I poked fun at everyone else)!
A little self deprecating humor is a healthy thing, don’t you think?

Not 2 Bee-4 – Leiulf Clausen

As mentioned previously, I have been photographing my art from drawing classes 1,2 &3 to update and use in my portfolio. One piece I always kind of liked was an oil pastel entitled “Not 2 Bee”. It was an assignment on texture that utilized a real, dead yellowjacket in the upper left corner (hence the pun in the title, not 2 Bees, one yellowjacket). As I took these classes in 2001, the insect is long disintegrated, so I decided to adapt this piece using my “Pento” technique in Photoshop.

As you can see from this screenshot, the process involves a lot of trial and error, experimenting with layers and blend modes until you get what you want. I attempted to make the drawing seem almost photographic, while adding a bit of a photograph of trees in the background that I tried to make look drawn. I further reversed reality by making the ground layer of the earth seem like magma, and the “core” layer seem like earth. I’m real pleased with the results. I hope you like it too.

Marina Abramović – Extreme Performance Artist

For my final in Art 118 I decided to revist the film SE7EN, cutting it down to just over 5 min and running it over my own re – mix of “The Hearts Filthy Lesson” (the closing song in the film). I did this for the same reasons that David recorded the song. In class we were required to present reports on certain, pre-chosen, Extreme Performance Artists. I chose Chris Burden.

Chris Burden – Extreme Performance Artist

Chris was familiar to me because Bowie had written “Joe The Lion” for him on his 1977 album “Heroes”. I found him to be incredibly interesting. Not only did he have himself shot in a Museum and crucified to the hood of a VolksWagon, he put his own life in danger through isolation, deprivation and electrocution. He also endangered others, holding a knife to the throat of a female interviewer in his first “T.V. hijacking”, shooting a gun at LAX at an overhead 747 and shooting matchstick rockets at a woman lying on a bed of flammable paper.

As mentioned in a previous post, in 1995 David Bowie and Brian Eno collaborated on a cd about Extreme Performance Art entitled “1.Outside”. A murder took place outside a museum. The question to ponder is…is it Art because a Museum was involved?

The song was lent to the film SE7EN to extend that question to it’s natural conclusion. Certain “Serial Killers” do what they do to draw attention to a cause they believe in. Great planning and skill goes into their “Performances”. The fact that they primarily hurt others is not entirely a cause for disqualification from the genre of Extreme Performance Art.

Hello Cast n Crew,

William Clausen

We have been asked to film 6 episodes, this will give us plenty to air on KVMD and in conjunction we will continue to work on distribution on a world wide campus. I’m striving in parallel directions, considering are aim will be to also drive the audience to our current channel that is airing the show.

I’ve also processed a kickstarter campaign, should be up and running by next week and will ask that you please share with family, friends, media, blogs, social networks aiming at the those that are in that genre.

We will be introducing a few new characters in this next episode and look forward to another successful shoot.

William has also talked to the founder of COMICFEST (San Deigo), he was wondering about a possible panel about “Warlock’s Magic: The Series” at the show at the convention in October. WOW!

We weren’t expecting things to move so quickly when we shot Episode 1, but now we have an audience and we will need to keep the momentum rolling.

Edward and William are able to shoot the next two episodes March 23th-29th, please read through the script and the character sheets for the new two characters. Edward and William will prepare Call Sheets and Storyboards to have the smoothest production possible. We will do our very best for everybody involved to accommodate you the best we can. So please email or call me as soon as possible confirming if this schedule will work for you.

Peacock – Leiulf Clausen

Happy Monday to you all!
Here in the States we still observe Daylight Savings Time. So it’s time to Spring ahead.
I decided to use this impetus to redesign Leiulf.com.
My aim was to make it more user friendly, without losing my trademark “I’m an Illustrator” feel.
In Art 215 Portfolio Development instructor Senseney Stokes kindly brought in professional lighting and I have been archiving my large drawings.
One that I particularly like, a couple of loosely sketched Peacock feathers I decided to try as a frame around my content area.
I think it conveys what I’m trying to communicate without overstatement.

The Next Day is number 1 world wide!

Spring is coming and it promises new growth among established glories blooming once more. As this month’s entry on Music Passion must include spring in either the title or lyric, I chose “Wild Is The Wind” because it serves a double purpose. The song is a soundtrack made for a life-long, passionate love affair. and serves the purpose of this posts main content quite admirably. Last month David bowie released a video (see below) from his first album in 10 years. This month the entire thing is available on Itunes and is due out in stores shortly. But that’s not all. Also opening in London on March 23rd at the Victoria and Albert Museum is the the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie.

23 March – 11 August 2013. The V&A has been given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate . David Bowie will feature more than 300 objects that include handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs and Bowie’s own instruments. From south-east London to outer space, David Bowie is rock’s greatest self-reinventor. As the V&A opens a blockbuster show of his outfits and art, Katie Dailey talks to the curators and picks seven ages of an icon.

Mod Bowie 1962-1968: The man who was called David Jones

It’s tempting to imagine that David Bowie fell to earth in a spangly onesie, but photos of the artist as a young man show him to have been a serious mod. The ultimate early adopter, he started a trend for tapered-leg trousers at Bromley Technical High School, and dyed his hair with food colouring.

You can see the blazer he wore in beat group The Konrads in the exhibition, with bold stripes drawn on by Bowie himself. In 1964, his first TV appearance saw the 17-year-old on BBC2’s ‘Tonight’ as part of the ‘Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Men with Long Hair’. ‘I think we’re all fairly tolerant,’ a polite young Bowie opines, modestly attired in a suit and with a Brian Jones-esque moptop. ‘But for the last two years we’ve had comments like “Darlin’” and “Can I carry your handbag?”, and I think it has to stop.’ He soon stopped worrying about reactions to his appearance and began playing with them.

Hippy Bowie 1969-1972: The man who wore a dress

After escaping a loathed job in a Soho advertising agency, Bowie became a full-time performer – while still living in Foxgrove Road, Beckenham with his mum. He failed to secure roles in West End productions of ‘Oh, What a Lovely War!’ and ‘Hair’, and flirted with Buddhism, performance art and maxi dresses. When he married Angie Barnett in 1970, the two adopted a similar look: flowing locks, trousers and blouses. He was frequently described as looking like Greta Garbo. In 1971 he caused a sensation with the cover of ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, reclining in a medieval-style number by designer Michael Fish, whose Marylebone boutique specialised in ‘man dresses’ – one of the few missing pieces in the exhibition. His mum was bemused but tolerant, telling the press: ‘As long as he remains a boy, I can’t see any harm in it.’

Glam Bowie 1972-1974: The man who changed the world

Now living with Angie (still in Beckenham), with the world starting to take notice, Bowie decided to make things interesting. The streak of lightning, the shock of red hair, the insect-like body in a sequinned second skin: Ziggy Stardust is Bowie’s most visually memorable persona. It was created piecemeal, a jigsaw of cultural references assembled by the interested-in-everything Bowie. The haircut came first – courtesy of Suzy Fussey of Evelyn Paget ladies’ hair salon on Beckenham High Street. She later dyed it red to match a picture of Marie Helvin that Bowie had seen in a magazine. The make-up was inspired by Alice Cooper and the outfit by costumes in Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’, stitched together by designer Freddie Burretti. Finally, Bowie – always first to spot new talent – went to the first Japanese fashion show to take place in the UK and hired Kansai Yamamoto, who would become the genius behind Ziggy’s most memorable costumes, like the catsuit that even Kate Moss struggled to get into on a 2003 Vogue shoot. Then Bowie shaved off his eyebrows and things started to get really weird. ‘I can take on guises of different people I meet,’ he said in 1973. ‘I can take on their accents – I’m a collector.’

Soul Bowie 1974-1976: The man who was black on the inside, thin and white on the outside

Having built Ziggy Stardust into a global phenomenon, Bowie killed him off, becoming preoccupied with a new interest in soul. While on the ‘Diamond Dogs’ tour in the States, he went to see The Temptations, The Spinners and Marvin Gaye. Now 28, his music took a more soulful turn and, as ever, he created a visual persona that worked in synergy with it. Living in LA, and subsisting on a diet of cocaine, Bowie took to dandyish tailoring, favouring a powder-blue Yves Saint Laurent suit. After seeing Judi Dench in a production of ‘Cabaret’ he adopted his iconic ‘Thin White Duke’ look. Emphasis on the thin: his monochrome Ola Hudson suits are in this show; the trousers have 26-inch waists.

Berlin Bowie 1977-1979: The man who did things differently

Close to self-destruction, Bowie took himself to Berlin to soak up the music and art scene, and break himself of an epic coke habit. Estranged from Angie, he immersed himself in the music of Brian Eno, the writing of William Burroughs and the art of Salvador Dalí – and moved in with Iggy Pop. Bowie played with Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies cards and borrowed Burroughs’s cut-up technique to piece together lyrics from words on scraps of paper.

After his psychedelic, androgynous and theatrical characters, the most controversial thing Bowie could have done with his image was to pare it right down – so he dropped the glitter and went monochrome, pictured in black and white on the cover of ‘Heroes’, wearing a simple leather jacket and quiffy hairdo that suggests he might have caught a few episodes of ‘Happy Days’. This artlessness was, of course, highly self-conscious: all his artefacts from the period were carefully squirrelled away, including sketches on Gitanes packets and menus from Bowie and Iggy’s favourite Berlin café. We can’t imagine they ate much…

New romantic Bowie 1980-1989: The man who loved a performance

By 1980, Bowie was back in dress-up mode again – flying between London and New York and playing gigs in both cities. On ‘Saturday Night Live’, he performed with the then-unknown cabaret countertenor Klaus Nomi. To sing ‘TVC 15’ he wore a dress with a toy poodle at his feet with a television screen in its mouth. Don’t think anyone saw that coming… For the ‘Ashes to Ashes’ video, he revisited a lifelong fascination with sad clown figure Pierrot (who he would also reference in song ‘Threepenny Pierrot’: ‘Happy little feet that dance all day/Lonely little heart with lots to say’) and commissioned Natasha Korniloff (costume designer for Bowie’s 1967 stage debut, ‘Pierrot in Turquoise’) to create an astonishing cyber-clown suit. He dropped in on London’s Blitz club, the hive brain of the new romantic movement, and recruited scene kingpin Steve Strange for ‘Ashes to Ashes’. Ever prolific, he also played Joseph Merrick, duetted with Queen, and, in a performance that still gives children of the ’80s nightmares, played the Goblin King in ‘Labyrinth’. King Jareth’s crystal globe is in the exhibition; thankfully his codpiece is not.

Modern Bowie 1990-present: The man who turned his back on it all

If Bowie’s career can be characterised by one thing, it is creative foresight. ‘When he decides to do something, he picks the most cutting-edge, most interesting person in the world to do it with,’ says Geoffrey Marsh. In 1997, Bowie commissioned a young Alexander McQueen to make him a Union Jack frock coat, painstakingly abraded with cigarette burns. It would be the centrepiece of the sleeve to ‘Earthling’, seen from the back as Bowie looks over the green fields of England, lord of all he surveys. After a heart attack in 2004, he withdrew to New York, ceased touring and refused all interview requests. His surprising, brilliant comeback album (see review p40) marks yet another era for Bowie – one in which the music may have to make its own noise, without the performance that has been so instrumental to his success, and in which an element of retrospection is apparent for the first time. In 2013, Bowie is clearly as mesmerised by his past as we are.

Baby_Snakes_L.P._Frank Zappa

The rules required it to be under 2 minutes and the Title track was a natch. I based it on “The Science of Life (reel x)”, an early public school film on feminine hygiene and sex education. The quotes in the video are the actual quotes used in the film. I unveiled the rough cut on Valentine’s day, received critique, and spent the last 2 days polishing it into the current format. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Heart-of-the-Sunrise-Yes

Heart is the word in this month’s Music Passion competition. While I could post something that actually has a shot at winning (like Niel Young’s “Heart of Gold”) I decided instead to continue featuring things I find musically outstanding. Last month I introduced you to the Montreux Jazz Festival DVD series and this month I’m dipping into it again to come up with “Heart of the Sunrise”.

This powerful yet gentle rendition by the legendary group YES should convince you of why they are in my top 2 groups of ALL TIME (the other being King Crimson).
So sit back with your favorite beverage and “Fly into the Sun”.
